Sophia S. Wong, M.D.
Dr. Sophia Wong is a board certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist, offering skilled and compassionate care to patients with various conditions affecting the vitreous, macula, and retina. As a vitreoretinal surgeon, she provides both medical treatments and surgical procedures to preserve and improve sight.
A native of New Jersey, Dr. Wong attended college at The University of Chicago and attained her bachelor’s degree in three years, graduating with honors, a National Merit scholarship and Dean’s List awards. An impactful volunteering experience with a blind patient suffering from macular degeneration stirred her to pursue medicine to help others with similar obstacles. She earned her medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and completed ophthalmology residency at The George Washington University, where she was appointed chief resident in her final year. The precision of retinal microsurgery drew Dr. Wong to choose additional training in a vitreoretinal fellowship at University of California (Davis). There, she honed her diagnostic and surgical skills and became proficient in managing a wide variety of diseases.
Patients of Dr. Wong value her inclusive approach, allowing for joint decision-making on treatment options after receiving a thorough evaluation and clear explanation. Dr. Wong keeps up to date with emerging innovations in order to offer the latest techniques. Staying active in research also ensures that her patients have access to new ideas and developments in the field. Dr. Wong has published in respected scientific journals such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology and has presented her work at national conferences. Additionally, she is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists.
She is also Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at George Washington University. She previously practiced in Maryland and Washington, D.C. prior to joining Virginia Retina Specialists. Dr. Wong is available to see patients in Falls Church, Reston, and Woodbridge.
